I really enjoyed this episode—it immediately brought to mind the band Blind Melon, a group I was completely obsessed with in high school. Their lead singer, Shannon Hoon, was known for writing deeply emotional and often heartbreaking lyrics, yet delivering them through upbeat melodies and fast tempos. It created this fascinating contrast: music that made people smile and dance, even if they didn’t fully realize the pain behind the words. I remember doing several presentations on his work, exploring how his lyrics revealed a struggle with addiction, trauma, and feelings of exclusion. In one instance, he wore a dress on stage—something I interpreted in a social studies class as a deliberate act. I believed he expected a certain reaction from the audience so he could justify the sense of not belonging that haunted him. A classmate countered that maybe it was just the drugs, but I’ve always preferred to see it through the lens of intentional expression—an artist communicating something more layered and complex. Malcolm has spoken before about troubled artists, and this episode was another powerful reminder. Thank you for bringing me back to that time in my life—and for highlighting the importance of truly listening to the words. I can’t wait to hear more.
